An evaluation of your own performance- what you did well/what you could have done better? Throughout all of the tasks that I took part in, I believe that I performed well in some of them but then in others I could have performed much better. Throughout all of the tasks I believe that I participated as much as possible in order to get the tasks completed, participation was important for the team because of the limited numbers within the team, if I didn’t participate as much as possible then the team may have struggled to complete all of the tasks.
I always try to participate as much as possible within all of the tasks, if I don’t then I feel like I have let the team down and could have done better within the task. Another part in which I did well was proposing and developing ideas for the team, when we were given the task I would firstly think to myself about any ideas I may have for the task, then if I believed that one of the ideas was good I would tell the group and find out their opinions on the idea.
I was particularly good at developing the ideas of the other team members, when they come up with an idea I would try to think of ways in which It could be improved upon, I believe the team found this helpful because they were struggling to come with more ideas so if I could develop the ideas of the other team members then we would not have to keep up with a lot of new ideas.
The final part in which I believe I did well was my communication with the team, throughout all of the tasks I was always talking with the other team members trying to help them through any problems that they were having with their part of the task, communication was key for the whole team so we could understand what each team member was doing and whether they needed help with their part of the task.
On the other hand I did have some weaknesses throughout the tasks, the first weakness of mine was I did not have a lot of confidence in some of the ideas that I had come up with and so was afraid to put these across to the team but if I had more confidence in them then the team may have seen them as good ideas and they may have worked well for the team. Secondly if I was struggling to understand what we had to do in the task then I would not look for any advice on what we will need to do I would try to work it out myself.
I should have clarified with my team what we needed to do and if they didn’t know then we should have worked as a team to try and figure out what we needed to do. This was my biggest weakness because it meant that I struggled throughout the entire task and didn’t perform to the best of my ability. Another weakness of mine were my leadership skills, I believed that I would be able to control and lead the team in a good manner, but once the task had started I soon found out that I could have performed better.
My first problem was my inability to decide on which part of the task that each team member should take part in, once I had finally given the roles to the team I then struggled to keep all the members motivated and as a result we were only able to complete half of the task. I should have tried to take control from the start and have more confidence in my ability of being a leader, without the confidence I struggled to take control and as a result we were unable to complete the task.
An evaluation of the team’s overall performance- what you did well/ what could have been improved? As a team we had our strengths and weaknesses whilst working together, but as we went through the tasks we had to learn to work through the weaknesses and try to turn them into strengths. One of our big strengths as a team was our ability to communicate with each other in a good manner, throughout all of the tasks we tried to communicate with each other at the start of the task to identify what we needed to do as a team and how we are going to complete the task.
Once we started the tasks we then had to communicate throughout the tasks to make sure that everyone understood what they were doing and whether we needed to come up with any new ideas for the task that we had. Another strength of the team was our ability to come up with a range of different ideas and then working as a team to improve on the ideas, this strength was important to use because we needed to come up with a range of ideas for all of the tasks that we were involved in. f we were unable to come up with a lot of ideas for each task then we may have struggled to complete some of the tasks that we had been set, most of the tasks involved us to work as a team to discuss the ideas that each of us had, we made sure that everyone was listening and participating during each part of the task in which we had to discuss the ideas.
The final strength of the team was the overall participation of the team, within all of the tasks every team members made sure that they were participating as much as possible with the role in which they had been set, if all the team members were not participating as much as possible then it could result us in failing some of the tasks that we had been set because in each task we didn’t have a big time limit in which we had to come up with ideas, put these ideas into practice and then come up with any alternative ideas that may be needed in order for us to complete the task.
As well as the strengths of the team we had our weaknesses as well, the first weakness of the group was we sometimes struggled to agree on the ideas that had been put forward, this was because other team members thought that their own ideas were much better and so they didn’t want to let the other team member’s idea being chosen over theirs. This caused a slight division within the group throughout the rest of the tasks because some of the team members didn’t want to speak to each other and they disagreed with some of the other ideas that the other team member had come up with.
The second weakness of the team was we struggled to make decisive decisions when it mattered, for example in a number of the tasks a team leader was not elected and so we had to work as a team without a leader but when it come to a key decision we struggled to come to an agreement or no one stood up to make the decisive call in what we were going to do. This led to us trying a lot of ideas until one worked, this wasted a lot of time for the team and as a result we were unable to finish some of the tasks.
An evaluation of the team leader Within each task we had nominated leaders who had to take control of the group, they were given the instructions as to what we had to do within the task. They then had to delegate roles to each team leader before deciding on how they were going to run the team during the task. Task 1- Straw Bridges What did they do well? From the start the leader made sure that they had control of the team and they made sure that from the start we knew what we needed to do and what the leader expected from us.
Another strength of the leader was they were very good at making decisive decisions when they were needed, there were a couple of times in which we were unsure which idea we should use so the leader had to step up and make the decisive decision. If they didn’t do this then we may have spent a lot more time trying to work out what we should do. What could have been done better? The weakness of this leader was their participation within the task, because they were leader they believed that they could sit back and just tell people what to do without doing anything themselves.
This wasn’t very motivational for the team because we were doing all the work and the leader was trying to be too controlling over the team instead of helping us with the task. The second weakness that the leader had was their problem solving skills, when we hit a problem within the task we looked to the leader to try to come up with an idea that will help solve the problem but it took a lot of time for them to figure one out and by the time they had we only had a number of minutes left before the task would finish.
This resulted in us not completing our bridge and as a result we failed with the task. Were there any restrictions on the role of the team leader? There were a number of restrictions within the task that the team leader had to take into account, the first being the dimensions in which the bridge had to be. In order for the bridge to be accepted we needed to make sure that we built it no smaller than the dimensions that had been given to us by the lecturer.
The next restriction was the bridge would need to be able to hold a roll of tape, so the leader needed to come up with an idea that would be able to stand by itself but also be able to hold the roll of tape without it falling off or breaking. Task 2- Egg Drop Challenge What did they do well? This leader was very good at participating within all aspects of the task; they made sure that they were always doing something to help the team members either individually or the team in general.
This was useful to the team because we could see the leader getting involved so it motivated us to try and work as hard as possible in order to get the task completed. They were also very good at motivating the team throughout the task; the team needed motivating because within some of the previous tasks we were unable to complete the task because we were not motivated. What could have been done better? The leader was unable to control the team throughout the task; they were more focused on helping the team instead of leading the team, this was not useful as we did not have any guidance as to which steps we should take next within the task.
It was also left down to the team in general to make the decisive decision which didn’t work out too well because this caused some disagreements within the team. This is where the leader’s second weakness comes in because when there was a disagreement within the team the leader did nothing to try and work with the team to try and solve the disagreement. This caused a division within the group because the individuals were unable to solve the problem and as a result they would not speak to each other throughout the rest of the task.
Were there any restrictions on the role of the team leader? Within this task the leader was given limited resources (one sheet of paper, 2 paper clips, 2 paper cups, an egg and a shopping bag) these had to be used so when we dropped the egg from a height it would not break, if it broke then we failed the task. This is the only restriction that we had during the task, we tried to use as many of the resources as possible but in the end we were unable to stop the egg from breaking when it was dropped. Task 3- Marshmallow and Spaghetti Towers What did they do well?
The leader within this task was our best leader of the day, from the start he took control of the team and set out the plan we was going to take during the task. Once the task had started he made sure that he had full control of the team throughout the task and that everybody was on task and not falling behind or being lazy. He also made sure that everyone understood what they needed to do, always checking on each individual to see how they are doing and if they needed help then he would have tried to help them to make sure that we got the task complete. What could have been done better?
Although the leader was very good at having control over the team sometimes this came across as a bit over-powering and some of the team members did not like this, the leader decided that because they were the leader that they were going to try and take as much control as possible leaving little for the rest of the team to do. This de motivated some of the team members because they were unable to do the work that they wanted and when they were seen as taking a back seat by the team leader he would try to get them to get back on task even though they had nothing to do.
Were there any restrictions on the role of the team leader? Within this task we had to buy the resources that were needed for the task, and we also had to try and build the highest tower possible. So the team leader had to try and think of a way that would mean we have the highest tower as well as the most cost effective way of building the tower this high. This restricted us with some of the ideas that we had because they would have cost too much but we were able to come up with a design that was the tallest and also the most cost effective for its height.
