My biggest motive to further my education is myself. According to Malcolm Knowles research there are four different motives that stimulate adults to learn. The “Practical Context” suggests that an adult is motivated to learn because the knowledge he/she gains will be put into practice whether it’s immediately or in the future. This person feels that the information will help him/her cope with daily situations with more ease. The “Experiential Context” this adult learner is someone that has become wise with age and has formed a solid foundation about what they know through personal experience.
This person is open to fresh ideas and adapts to new situations and in the course discovers a newly refined sense of logic. The “Idealistic Context” refers to an adult that is motivated to learn for the sake of learning. This type of learner takes pleasure within the process of a deeper and more theoretical development. Even though theory is more interesting than practice this person knows that practice is still essential. The last motive is the “Personal Context”. This motive is attained through the desire of self-betterment. This describes my personal motive for learning.
The main reason I returned to school is to be able to be the first in my immediate family to graduate from college. My mother raised my two sisters and me as a single parent with very limited resources. I barely ever saw her due to that fact that she had to work at two different jobs. She wasn’t the most affectionate mother but showed her love through actions rather than words. Very seldom did we have deep conversations but one conversation that stands out in my mind is when she said to me “Fernando, I am sorry I can’t provide the same things your friends have.
I didn’t even have the opportunity to continue my education. I only went to school up to 6th grade because my mother forced me to work or I would have to leave the house. I want you to have a better future. That is why I brought you all to the U. S. Here everything is within your reach. All you have to do is study hard and get a college education. I wish I could spend more time with you guys but because I was unable to continue school this is the best I can provide.
Don’t do it for me or anyone else but do it for yourself so that one day you can provide for your kids! Well in 2002 four days after my high school graduation I joined the Marine Corps. and figured after my service they would be able to pay for my education. It’s been seven years since I was injured in combat. First and foremost I want to prove myself that I can complete this with hard work by taking it one day at a time assignment by assignment. I feel that this is something I need to do for myself and even though I am happy with my current job it doesn’t hurt to have a degree to improve my chances to gain a better paying job.
