Dreaming In Cuban
Social life and psychological implications
The social life as well as psychological implications is the central theme of the book. This starts with the two main characters, Pillar and Celia in their relationship, which is strongly influenced by the Cuban revolution. In addition, love relationship has strongly been discussed, perhaps how the bond becomes strong after the marriage and how sensitive it can be to the psychological disturbance of the person. In the book, the women seem to face more of psychological torture as compared to men when separation occurs or when relationship is deemed by other factors. For instance, when Celia met Gustavo the two becomes lovers. With time Gustavo leaves, her on his return to Spain for business .This depresses Celia to extent of losing the will to live.
Despite Celia facing the mental trauma after the fail of her first relationship, she got married the second time by Jorge delpino. Though she was afraid and tried avoid it, she later accepted to take second chance after strong conviction by Jorge to marry him .When they married, they held a weeding and after their honeymoon, Jorge goes on for a long business trip with intention to inflict torture to Celia. This was through frequent punishments out of the Jealous due to her past relationship with Gustavo. With time, the situations never changed, Gustavo started leave her regularly with his parents. This situation worsened more when she became pregnant. This had much of psychological torture to Celia according to (Garcia, 98) .By the time she delivered to her daughter Lourdes, her mind had snapped.
Latina, like other businesspersons, has a goal to fulfill her family requirements and foster good relationships with her children. More, she is determined to have a better education to her children .The same spirit is also expressed when other Latinas entrepreneurs say that they work hard to earn more for the family and the children. This reflects the special set of social life for the family and strong build up of family ties stronger, despite their struggle for the basic for the family needs such as clothing, food and shelter (Garcia,199).
Exile is the act of walking away from town, country or love. In the novel points out and even explain how expose itself from the characters. There are characters that moved from their country to other countries and even who set out in order to leave their friends. Gustavo is a native from Spain. He visited other countries where came to fall in with Almeida for the first time. After couples of days and months, he decided to leave his fiancée alone and free to Spain again. Emotionally, this affected Almeida is a loving woman and really knows repercussions of love as of today. Celia becomes so devastated because of the sort of nomadic life she went through in Cuba in 1961 (Christina, 203)
This novel shows deeply on the exile theme and even well illustrated. Celia is depressed since she is from her husband where she would like to spend her with him. Consequently, she has no power change all these since it is a way of nature.
On the other side Lourdes, try to exhibit exile when she plans to forget about her rape and totally evades all that past hence turning to a new leave. All that vivid plans she had in Cuba deteriorated as woman of open mind. A girl named Pillar matures in mind that one day she will go to visit grandparents in Cuba but that was not the case .This remains only in her soul and become history to her. In other words, she will never go to Cuba for that reason and becomes exile to her full history and whatsoever. She has no authority for this hence she becomes naïve to her side as a girl. She too has intentions to flee away but she fails and remains wordless as an innocent girl. All this challenges had caused by cultural beliefs from that land that is her mother’s denial. All these explanatory sentences illustrate on theme of exile (Garcia, 203)
Depression in the family
Family relationship is a group of member and they do socialize in their ways. Therefore, in the book of dreaming Cuba illustrates clearly on it is exposed. In short is the chamber of of the family relationship. As seen by the Celia Almeida who meets Gustavo marries him before he return s Spain .Emotionally this affects Almeida because of strong passion and great love that she had her small heart for him as quoted on (Garcia,34 ).
This peculiar book extends on how relationships disrupted by material severance. It also incorporates love, political affairs, and even poor communication. In the novel exhibits that there are relationships are ruined on the way. For instance, in the novel Celia Almeida’s love did not go a distance with her first love named Gustavo (Garcia, 74). Unfortunately, Lourdes get married very far from the mothers family hence her admire for her. There is no solution for this since she is under her husband rules and regulations and no way will deviate from those rule and regulations. Addition to that Felicia is so far from the family, which she has on her world life. Celia feels so close to her grandchildren. What appear to diminish gradually their generation for the whole extended family? Felicia expose to terminate the life of her husband’s among of three (Garcia, 54).
Faith is a very important issue in the book dream in the Cuba. This is clearly demonstrated in the Felicia’s childhood friendship together with Hermina who is the daughter of Santeria. Sanitarian is a religion from Africa that is practiced by Cuban African. The religion was brought by Africans who went as slaves in Cuba. Since they were compelled to convert to Catholicism, worship in a civilized manner and dress modestly, the slaves made a hybrid religion that resembled Catholicism at first look but still contained the doctrines of their unique faith. In the beginning of the book, a mature Felicia is convinced by Herimina to be involved in a ritual sacrifice which would clean her spirit of her father’s death who did not frequently appear to Felicia as he did to Lourdes and Celia.
Felicia, even if she struggles with issues of mental health than her mother, she would most likely view them more as struggles related to spiritual. She found herself strained like her mother, even abusive relationship. Unlike her mother, we see her striking back. She becomes brutal toward all of her husband. Felicia cannot make a bond with the twin girls and firstborn children who becomes more and more distant Like Celia used to do .She does, nevertheless, have a well-built bond with the youngest kid, Ivanito, so much that she cannot visualize life without him. Mostly, it should be considered that Celia plays most likely the most vital responsibility in the Del pinto family’s life. It is possible to guess that she the strongest person in that family since she is the only one who was always in Cuba, always concerned with the family’s problem and she often attempts to maintain the family together (Garcia ,72)
All women in the family of Celia are blessed with several gifts. All of them have the possibility to predict future events and telegraphically have a conversation with each other. Not even one of them seems shocked when Jorge’s spirit appears to them. The book includes much discourse on the problem of truth perception and faith. Mean while the narrator depicts self consciousness in addressing a reader who is potentially skeptical and who has been affected by testimonies of truthfulness. Although faith is a superstitious occurrence, the book tries to present it through eyewitness’s testimonies (Christina Garcia ,78) .Garcia considerable capability as a writer tend to be to bring us breathing and living people in whom people can follow and who disclose a great deal of the times and circumstances in which the history has thrust them.
